How much compensation for a flight can I claim?

If the airline fails to inform you about the cancellation within the stipulated time period of a minimum of two weeks in advance, the airline should compensate you.* The amount also depends on the travel provider you have booked with, whether it is the airline itself or an online travel agent. The below are guidelines provided by the DGCA:

  • INR 5,000 or a one way booked basic fare plus fuel charge, whichever islesser, if the flight has a block time of up to and including one hour

  • INR 7,500 or a one way booked basic fare plus fuel charge, whichever islesser, if the flight has a block time of more than one hour and up to andincluding two hours

  • INR 10,000 or a one way booked basic fare plus fuel charge, whichever islesser, if the flight has a block time of more than two hour

According to the DGCA, the airline also has to provide free-of-charge meals and refreshments while you wait for your alternate flight, but this is only if you have already reported for your original flight. If you have been informed of the change less than 6 hours before the departure time, the airline will also be responsible for getting you to a different airport or terminal in case the alternate flight requires that. But remember, financial compensation is paid only if you provided adequate contact information at the time of booking.

What are my flight delay/cancellation rights?

  • You are entitled to compensation if you arrive at your final destination 3 hours later than planned.

  • The airline must be responsible for the delay (e.g. technical problem).

  • Compensation ranges between €250-600. It depends on the distance of your flights.

  • The airline has to provide food and drink after 2 hours of delay and hotel accommodation if your flight is delayed overnight.

What should I do when my flight is delayed?

  • Keep hold of any relevant travel documents (e.g. boarding cards, parking tickets, receipts).

  • Ask the airline for a delay confirmation, i.e. written confirmation of the cause of delay.

  • Help yourself to complimentary food and drinks at the airport
